The Jeep Screech

As will soon be evidenced, the old adage of “all good things come to those who wait” is not always the case. Last post I promised to upload our pictures and videos from the Progressive Insurance booth at the Quartzsite RV Show. Well here they are and I doubt anyone who spent more than a passing thought in anticipation of these contributions will be sorely disappointed.

Jeep Screech Trip with Jaws

Having previously experienced being in a vehicle with Debbie Dewdrops while on a sketchy road and having read last week’s Blog Post one can only wonder what possessed Lonesome Larry and Busty Barb the Believer to invite DD on this week’s Jaws Jaunts Jeep safari into the desert wilderness. Perhaps they had hoped their not quite heartfelt invitation might be turned down by the Dewdropian one. Alas, this was not to be the case and once the journey began there was no going back. So suffice to say, that over the next several hours we were subjected to an almost continuous overly melodramatic screeching, moaning and wailing that had it been an act surely would have garnered DD an Oscar nomination. Proof-reader’s note: definite exaggeration here!

Mitry Lake Hike

A respectable sized group including rookie hikers Greg and Kathy, arrived for the annual Mitry Lake hike. This hike while shorter than some we take (4.5 miles), offers some great scenic views and boulder filled washes present a challenge. As a warm-up for the hike Lonesome Larry and the Captain biked the 10 miles to the trailhead.

Mexican Dominoes and Dinner

Friday heralded the 1st annual DDDD (Debbie Dewdrops Dominoes and Dinner). The inaugural theme was Mexican which included Mexican food and Mexican dominoes. The dominoes challenge saw the 4 girls (DD, BBB, Red Fox and Kathy) take on the boys (CC, LL, Hawk and Greg) who seemed to be somewhat distracted by the forthcoming full moon and went down to defeat rather easily if I do say so myself. Not all was lost however, and as an act of retribution Hawk supplied the firewood and built a huge bonfire for the evenings sing-along to a collection of classic rock hits in honour of Bowie and Fry.

Moon Walk

The Captain and Lonesome Larry in a fit of full moon madness decided to venture out into the desert night with only moonlight to light the way. This late night walk was quite surrealistic. Fortunately the dynamic duo was not set upon by any marauding bands of burros or coyotes  and safely found their way home unscathed. Well almost unscathed as the Captain was tripped up once by a cleverly hidden rock and was heard to exclaim ” tis but a scratch”. LL also tripped a few times but his younger reflexes saved the day and kept him upright. meanwhile back on the home front DD and BBB enjoyed a girls night movie.

What CC thought would be a great night for photographs dimmed considerably when he discovered the battery in the camera was out of juice so there is little evidence available of this historic trip.

Fire and Rain

Seems like it’s been a while since I’ve had the time to park my butt long enough to get a new post on the Blog.  13 days isn’t all that much time but it does present the age old problem of trying to remember what we’ve been up to and putting it down in a coherent manner.  Although, I do suspect my faithful readers don’t really expect a well choreographed presentation here, so to do so might be confusing and misleading. So madly off I go in all directions.

¾ of the Alaskan Alliteration Alumni have now reconvened here at the LTVA and the fun and games have begun. And speaking of fun and games (not related to football madness) it behooves me to report some preliminary results. In the dominoes arena Lonesome Larry and the Captain’s dream of an undefeated season came to an abrupt and bruising end at 2 matches when Debbie Dewdrops and Busty Barb the Believer eked out a very slim victory.

The ICC (International Cribbage Challenge) resumed after a 2 month hiatus and the relentless practicing by the US Squad of Hawk and Red Fox has produced a favourable result for the Stars and Stripers with an early 2 game lead over the Canucks. As is usual in these circumstances DD has placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Captain for his easily distracted manner of playing the game. The Captain admits it is difficult to play any game properly without a hockey stick in ones hands.

The Fruits of Ones Labour

One of the joys of wintering in the south is the opportunity to head out and pick oranges, lemons and grapefruits right from the tree. Dashing Dave and Jezebel Jeannine chauffeured DD and the Captain out to a local organic farm where we picked fresh grapefruits and oranges. A 5 gallon bucket set us back a measly $8.00 and DD probably managed to eat at least half that amount while filling the buckets.

Dog Burn

JJ and Dave hosted their 2nd annual Dog Burn for the local ‘hood. A highlight of the afternoon was the special guest appearance of Frank Rodriguez (recording star and cowboy poet) who delivered several outstanding cowboy poems for us. Couldn’t help thinking that Fearless Frank and Bouncy Bernice would have loved being here for this. But as they couldn’t I have included a short video of one of Frank Rodriguez’s poems.

Elephant Hike (aka the ED Hike)

This was the only Thursday morning hike in the last 2 weeks as one was cancelled due to inclement weather (rain and cold). I believe that may be a first in our experience. A little bit of rain and cold and everyone stays home, however DD and CC did hike on their own. Another small group for the hike as a number of regular hikers from Canada aren’t here this year.

The Screech Ride

Because this is being written by a Canadian (no kidding you say) the title of this section might cause you to think that the like named over-intoxicating beverage from Newfoundland would come into play. But no it didn’t, although some of us might have used it, had it been available, to drown out the maniacal screeching heard from Debbie Dewdrops as we made our way through some back roads in the Kofa Wildlife Preserve. Certainly Jezebel Jeannine could have used it to dull the pain from being violently grabbed by DD at every bump in the road.

Now to be somewhat fair to DD the “road” was not actually a well travelled one and certainly not made for a full sized pickup truck but DD’s reaction was certainly disproportionate to the reality of the situation but realty sometimes escapes her.

Regardless JJ, Dashing Dave and the Captain attempted to enjoy the beautiful back country drive despite the 2 plus hours to travel a mere 12 miles.

Quartzsite RV Show

LL, BBB, DD, Greg, Cathy and the Captain piled into the pickup for the annual pilgrimage to the Quartzsite RV Show on the 16th. As this was opening day, the place was packed wall to wall with people of all sizes and description. Most notably was the number of people who surely believed this was a kennel club show as there were almost as many canines as 2 legged folks and the majority of these four legged creatures were carted about in various wagons and strollers.

An indicator of just how hard up show goers were for entertainment was the popularity of the Progressive Insurance Booth. Despite the conspicuous absence of the enigmatic “Flo” the line-up for free trinkets was notable and additionally the opportunity to star in a short video was well attended. We all took our turns and once LL has provided me with copies I will get them posted for your viewing pleasure.

Happy New Year and Bonne Année from DD

One might surmise the delay in posting a New Year greeting could possibly be attributed to the Captain perhaps over imbibing in beverages fermented prior to ingesting in a celebratory manner on New Year’s Eve. Nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately a test of one’s sobriety or lack thereof does not necessarily have a direct correlation to the amount of alcohol in one’s blood and this I fear is borne out by an examination of the Captain’s state of mind.

Regardless there is no forgivable excuse and for the digression other than to take your mind away from the topic first raised. Now on with the show.

New Years Eve

The lack of invitations to attend a formal NYE gala found Debbie Dewdrops and CC looking forward to once again retiring by a reasonable 9:00 pm as per our normal routine. To put a damper on this plan Lonesome Larry and Busty Barb the Believer crashed the slumber party and managed to keep their hosts awake until the very late hour of 11:00 pm. Not quite midnight but pretty darn close.

DD prepared another great solar dinner (macaroni and cheese) for us all and the evening was spent listening to golden oldies (somewhat apropos) and a bit of melancholy with lyrics from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon:

“Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I’d something more to say”

But of course there is no dark side of the moon, it’s all dark.

DD and BBB also finished the year off in triumphant fashion by soundly thrashing the boys at dominos.

New Years Day Hike

The Captain not so easily managed to rouse DD fairly early on New Year ’s Day (see paragraph 1 above) for an invigorating hike (7.5 miles) around the reservoir. It was very much a snooze fest after that I’m afraid.

wxq

magnificent

Despite the above result CC and LL consulted their Ouija Boards and fearlessly made a New Year’s resolution that they intended an undefeated year with the tiles. No sooner avowed and the boys took the first match of the 2016 season from the girls hardly breaking a sweat.

Comings and Goings

This week sees the arrival of Hawk and Red Fox travelling in from Tucson for the next couple of months. One wonders if they have spent some time working on their cribbage game in our absence not that we suggest it needed some fine tuning but it never hurts to practice.

Jezebel Jeannine (JJ) and Dashing Dave rumbled into the LTVA yesterday and despite a couple of minor miscues (broken TV antenna on RV and running over and breaking a fire hydrant – not so minor) they arrived safe and sound. The downside is that they seemed to have brought some Missouri rain with them. Oh well helps keep the dust down.

BBB and LL are out of town in Apache Junction this week for repairs to the motor home ensuring  LL and CC bragging rights at least for a few more days.

2015 – The Year in Review

It was my intention to write up a comprehensive review of our travels and adventures in 2015 but the more I thought about it the less the idea appealed to me. My copious blog posts cover it off pretty well and even though it would be a convenience to my readers rather than slogging through each post there it is.

August to November

Suffice to say we logged over 13,000 miles from Yuma to Vancouver Island, back home to Vernon, then a trip to Alaska and back to Vernon, on to Kingston and finally back to Yuma. I get tired just thinking about it!  Along the way, we loved our visits with granddaughter Alyssa, our son Aaron, our parents and siblings. We also enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of Bouncy Bernice, Fearless Frank, Busty Barb the Believer, Lonesome Larry, Jezebel Jeannine and Dashing Dave. As I have set out before we really have been blessed with the wonderful people we have met on our travels and hometowns.
