Well kids another Yuma winter is winding down for the Captain and Debbie Dewdrops. In 2 short weeks we will be packing up and heading back home to Vernon, British Columbia for the first time since August 2015. We have our fingers and toes crossed that the funky white stuff will be gone by the time we get there in March. We are looking forward to meeting up with our home town friends soon, but in the meantime, the fun in the sun (even though we are getting a bit of rain at the moment) goes on and on.
We are happy to report that our doggie Goddaughter Gypsy is recovering quite nicely from her broken leg. Despite doctors orders of lots of bed rest GG seems determined to ignore that sage advice as her “puppy brains” at times get the best of her and cause LLL and BBB no end of consternation. And as she heals, she is also getting bigger and at the last weigh-in is now topping 13 lbs. Strangely enough her ears are growing at a faster pace than her body and may soon need to be tied up to avoid tripping her up.
The Captain was also able to trouble shoot and repair a leaking hot water tank with only some minor water damage. This was very fortunate as a new water tank costs in the range of $500.00. DD was most grateful as the cost of a new tank would have to have been appropriated from her shoe fund.
Hawk and Red Fox Hit Town
Our 2 good friends Hawk and Red Fox rumbled into town on their Harleys for a 3 day visit. The visit was a week later than originally scheduled due to inclement weather. Seems that once you get into your seventies no matter how hardy you are it’s time to ditch the Doors tune Riders on the Storm as your theme song and replace it with Row Row Your Boat. Just kidding Hawk!!! While back here in the desert, Hawk and Red Fox quickly got back into the swing of things with our 7 mile walk around the lake and our weekly group hike.
When not out and about, DD (with generous help from BBB and Pat) treated us to a Mexican fiesta dinner. After dinner we (CC, DD, Pat, Bill, Hawk, Red Fox, LLL and BBB) all enjoyed a couple of hours sitting around the campfire imbibing beverages guaranteed to keep the chill off. GG was also in attendance but as noted previously with her “puppy brain” ruling the day she was relegated to the truck for a “time out” for a good portion of the evening.
A one game winner-take-all Domino game was held between the boys and girls and being the gentlemen that we are, the girls were awarded the victory with some generous score keeping by the Captain.
Weekly Group Hikes
As promised by Group Hike Leader Steverino a new trail was taken out to the Little Grand Canyon which managed to avoid several of the severe hills that on previous outings had tested even the hardiest of hikers. Regardless the 5.5 mile hike attracted a season high hike crowd of over 15 hikers and the weather cooperated (cool) for the 3 plus hour trek.

Our other weekly group hike also brought out hikers in numbers (including Red Fox and Hawk) and combined an old hiking route with a mid hike detour through some previously unexplored slot canyons. The detour made what was already a fine hike into a desert delight. This modified hike has been officially added to the must do hikes for next season.

Back Country Biking
Steverino and the Captain have been able to, despite very, very busy schedules, get the bikes out to the back county each Tuesday and on our last outing we were treated to the rare sight of a lone wolf perched high atop a rocky ridge. At first it looked like it might be one of the wild burros that roam the area but it became clear that it was a wolf as were able to get within a few hundred yards and see its profile. It was too large to be a coyote. The wolf calmly kept us in sight for several minutes before deciding we were no threat and causally headed back over the ridge. This is definitely what going out into the back country is all about. And of course neither Steverino or CC carry electronic devices with us while biking so there is no photographic verification unless you get close enough to look through my left ear into my “photographic” memory.
Tucson Surprise for DD
The Captain and DD headed out to Tucson for a 3 day visit with her sister Jeneen and spouse Pat who are renting a condo there for the month of February. We were definitely looking forward to the visit and in particular to the endless hot showers and swimming pool. We arrived early afternoon and DD just had to rush in for a pee while the Captain unloaded the truck. In the middle of unloading the Captain was startled by DD’s wild screeching in the condo. Dropping everything and rushing in to save DD from what sounded like imminent peril, CC found DD in hysterics as she hugged MODD (Mother of DD) in the hallway. Seems the Oggorfians had conspired to surprise DD by having MODD make the trip to Tucson with Jeneen and Pat for the month. Needless to say the plan was a success and let’s just say it was good thing DD got to the bathroom before the BIG surprise!!
Video of Oggorfians in their splendour:
Well the 2nd BIG surprise of the trip came when we all went down to the Casino del Sol for the evening and none of the Oggorfians won any money. This really qualifies as more than a surprise and I expect there will be an official inquiry into whether the game was rigged.
Our main outing while in Yuma was a day trip to Tombstone. This was a first time trip for Pat, Jeneen and MODD and again we lucked out with pleasant and mild weather and very few tourists. The first time DD and CC were at Tombstone it was stinkin hot and very crowded.
On the day following Tombstone the 4 of us took a 5 mile hike around the mountains surrounding the condo complex at Tucson Heights. MODD begged off the hike saying she didn’t have off road tires on her walker (really??). Just off the trail there was an old foundation of a house and a truck buried up to its roof. No idea how the truck could have got there unless it was aliens?? Later we took a shopping trip to Costco and then home for some time in the hot tub.
We really had a good visit and next week MODD and the kids will be returning the favour with a trip to Yuma to visit us out in the desert.
